The Old Streets Need Different Work Than The New Ones
The original village around Main Street and the old rail line holds houses that have been through a lot of Illinois winters. Small footprints, steep older pitches, wood decking that was installed before plywood was standard, rear additions that were tacked on decades apart. When we open one of these up we are rarely surprised, but the homeowner sometimes is, so we walk the attic and look at the underside of the deck before we write anything down. Soft spots, old water staining and daylight at the eave tell you more than a walk on the shingles does.
Then there is everything that came later. Monee has picked up newer houses on the edges of the village and out toward Route 50, built with truss framing, OSB decking and builder shingle packages. Those roofs fail differently. They rarely rot from the inside. They lose tabs to wind, they cook out early if the attic never got proper intake ventilation, and they collect ice at the eave in a bad January because the insulation was blown in unevenly.
Both problems are fixable and neither one is a mystery. What matters is that a roofer looks at your specific house instead of quoting off a formula. A 1910 village house and a 2004 house on Route 50 get the same crew here, but they do not get the same scope.

Farm Ground Does Things To A Roof
Living next to worked fields is hard on shingles in ways nobody warns you about. Harvest season puts fine grit and chaff in the air for weeks, and that material settles into gutters and packs down in valleys where it holds moisture against the roof long after a rain has dried off everywhere else. Come spring, that packed debris is a mat of organic material sitting on asphalt, and moss and algae move into it. On the north slopes of houses out toward the fields, that dark streaking is a moisture problem, not a cosmetic one.
The other piece is what open ground does with rain. Wind-driven rain arrives sideways here rather than straight down, and sideways rain gets under a shingle edge and into a soffit vent in a way a normal rain never will. When we replace a roof on the exposed side of the village we pay attention to the drip edge, the starter course and the eave detail, because those three things are what stand between horizontal water and your decking.
