Most of DuPage County filled in between the early 1980s and the mid 2000s, which puts a huge share of its housing stock in exactly the wrong window right now. The builder-grade three-tab roofs from the 80s and 90s are long past due. The architectural shingles that replaced them in the 2000s are hitting the end of their real service life, which is usually a decade shorter than the number on the wrapper. And the houses themselves are big: complicated hip and gable combinations, multiple dormers, front-facing gables over two-story entries, and roof areas that run twice what a south suburban ranch measures.

Ventilation is the other one. A lot of DuPage attics were built with plenty of ridge vent and almost no working intake at the soffits, or with intake that got buried by blown insulation years later. That imbalance cooks shingles from below in summer and builds the ice dams that put water behind your fascia in January.
