Old Stone Houses Need A Different Roof Crew

Batavia built itself out of the limestone it quarried, and the houses near the river show it. Thick stone walls, frame additions added over a century of ownership, steep pitches, and roofs that meet masonry at every turn. Water gets into a limestone wall and travels. It runs along a mortar joint, comes out three feet from where it went in, and stains a ceiling in a room nowhere near the actual failure. The real fix is counterflashing cut properly into the masonry and step flashing woven course by course where roof meets wall. Head east toward Randall and out toward the Fermilab boundary and it becomes late-90s and 2000s subdivision.
