Gutter Replacement When Patching Stops Paying

The Point Where Repair Stops Making Sense

We fix a lot of gutters and we would rather fix yours than sell you new ones. But repairs have a break-even, and it arrives faster than most people think. If you have paid to have the same elevation re-sealed twice, you have already spent a meaningful fraction of what replacement costs and you still own the original problem.

Here is the plain test we use. If the aluminum is sound, the fascia is solid and the sizing is right for the roof, repair. If two of those three are gone, replace. Repairs restore a system to its original design, and if that design was wrong, restoring it accomplishes nothing except paying for the same overflow next spring.

Signs The System Is Finished

• Aluminum gone chalky and brittle. Once the metal cracks when you flex it, sealing seams is pointless because the next crack is somewhere else.
• A gutter that overflows every hard rain even the week after cleaning. That is a capacity problem, and no repair adds capacity.
• Sectional runs where you are chasing the third or fourth failed lap joint. You cannot repair your way out of the joint count.
• Hangers that will not hold because the fascia is soft. The wood has to come off, and gutter has to come down to do that anyway.
• Runs bent or partly torn from ice load, wind or a branch. Straightened aluminum never sits true again, and the pitch will not hold.
• Two by three downspouts on a big roof. They were undersized when they went up and they still are.

Fascia And Soffit Get Inspected Before Anything New Goes Up

This is the part of replacement that separates a real job from a fast one, and it is why we take the old gutter off before quoting the final number rather than after.

With the old runs down, the fascia board is exposed along its whole length for the first time in decades. Water running behind a run soaks the top edge of the fascia, and rot works downward from there. From the ground with the gutter still on you see nothing. With it off, an awl tells you everything in about four minutes per elevation.

What we do about it: photograph everything, show you, price board replacement by the foot before we buy it, and let you decide. Most homes need a section or two, often around the corners where the old downspout outlets were. Homes that have been leaking behind the gutter for a decade need more, and you will see exactly why on your own siding.

Sizing The New System To The Roof You Actually Have

Replacement is the one chance to fix the capacity mistake, so we do not simply match what came off. We measure the roof planes feeding each elevation, look at the pitch, and note where valleys concentrate water onto a short section of eave.

That usually means the same conversation about five inch versus six inch aluminum and about downspout size. A three by four inch downspout moves roughly twice what a two by three does, and on a house overflowing for years the downspout is often the real bottleneck, not the gutter. We also revisit downspout placement instead of reusing the old holes. Where water leaves the house decides whether your basement stays dry, and the old locations were often chosen for looks. With everything down, moving an outlet ten feet to where the grade actually falls away costs nothing extra and pays off every storm. The clay out here does not absorb what you give it, so discharge four to six feet out on a real slope matters more than it would almost anywhere else.

Doing It With The Roof, Or Not

If your roof is within a couple years of needing work, replace the gutters with the roof. The two systems meet at the eave and they should be installed in one sequence: tear off, deck repair, ice and water shield at the eave, drip edge set to overhang into the channel, then the gutter hung to that drip edge. When one crew does all of it, nothing gets left to chance in the two inches where roof becomes gutter.

Splitting the work costs you twice. New gutters hung in April get pulled again when the roof goes on in September, and reinstalled runs never sit quite as true. Worse, when a separate roofer sets drip edge over a gutter someone else hung, the two rarely line up and water sneaks behind. If a shingle roof replacement is on the horizon, say so when you call and we will price the combined job.

If the roof has ten good years left, none of that applies. We replace gutters on sound roofs constantly, and just check the drip edge while we are up there, because a gutter cannot fix a flashing problem.

Old Runs Down, New Runs Up, Same Day

Old runs and downspouts come down first thing and go straight into the trailer for recycling. Fascia gets checked, and anything soft gets shown to you before it is covered. We chalk the fall, roll each run to full length off the coil machine on site, hang on hidden hangers into solid wood at 24 inch spacing, then cut and mount downspouts to the locations we picked with you.

Before we leave, every run gets flooded with a hose while you stand there and watch where the water goes. Low spots get corrected then, not on a callback. Ground gets swept for rivets and screws. Most homes are done in a day; big houses or ones needing fascia work run into a second.
