What The Tree Canopy Does To A Roof
Most of Morton Grove was built for families in the fifteen years after the war, and the housing reflects it: brick ranches, Cape Cods, story-and-a-halfs and a good number of split-levels, sitting on lots that were planted with maples and oaks that are now sixty and seventy feet tall. That canopy is the reason people love these streets. It is also the reason our inspections here look different than the ones we run in the open, treeless parts of the south suburbs.
Shade keeps the north-facing slopes damp for days after a rain. Damp shingles grow algae and moss, and moss is not cosmetic. Ice Dams In A Village That Holds Snow

Every January I get ice at the edge of the roof. Is that normal here?
Common, not normal. Snow sits longer under all that canopy, and a postwar attic with leaky ceiling penetrations melts it from below. Fix the air leaks and the venting and the dams usually stop. A new roof with the same broken attic will dam up the same way in year one.
