Most Gutters Are Replaced. Yours Should Be Sized.

The quick version of this job is to measure what came off and hang the same thing back up. That is how a house ends up with gutters that handled the rain in 1994 and overflow every July now. We would rather work out what the roof actually sheds first.

Five Inches Is A Default, Not An Answer

Almost every house on the northwest side wears five inch K-style aluminum, and for a lot of them that is genuinely the right trough. It is the default because it fits standard fascia, it is what the supply house stocks, and on a modest roof with a couple of downspouts it never gets tested hard enough to argue with.

Then there are the ones where it was never enough. A long unbroken eave on a steep roof funnels a lot of water into one trough, and the steeper the pitch the faster it arrives. Add a valley dumping onto that run and you have a section of gutter being asked to carry more water per minute than its cross-section can move. It does not fail politely. It sheets over the front lip during the worst ten minutes of the storm, which is exactly when you are looking out the window at it.

Six inch troughs move meaningfully more water than five, and on the right house the upgrade costs less than people expect because the labor is the same. The honest part is that plenty of houses do not need it. We would rather tell you the five inch is fine and size the downspouts properly than sell you a bigger trough that solves nothing.

What Actually Decides The Size

Roof area feeding the run, the pitch, whether a valley concentrates into it, and the length before water can reach an outlet. Those four things, measured, settle it. A shallow roof over a small footprint sheds slowly and forgivingly. A steep gable over a wide footprint with one downspout at the far end is a different problem wearing the same trough.

Downspouts Are Half The System And Get A Quarter Of The Thought

A trough is a holding pattern. The water leaves through the downspouts, and a run with too few outlets backs up long before its capacity is reached. Adding one outlet is usually cheaper than upsizing eighty feet of gutter, and on a lot of houses it is the whole fix. We count outlets against run length before we quote a bigger trough.

Where The Water Goes After That Is The Part That Costs Real Money

This is the one homeowners are most surprised by. A downspout that dumps at the base of the wall is putting a roof’s worth of water into the soil against your foundation, over and over, every storm. Around here that soil is clay, and clay holds it. The basement gets damp, the sump runs constantly, and the homeowner blames the basement.

Extensions, buried leaders, splash blocks that actually throw water past the backfill zone. It is unglamorous and it is frequently the difference between a dry basement and a recurring one. If you have a wet corner downstairs, go outside during the next real rain and look at what the nearest downspout is doing. It is often that obvious.

Seamless Against Sectional

Seamless is what we run, formed on site to the length of your eave, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. Sectional gutter has a joint every ten feet, and every joint is a place that eventually weeps. On a short straight run the difference is minor. On a long one it matters, and it is the reason a section of old gutter is usually stained underneath in the same places.

Guards, Honestly

Guards help on a house under mature trees, which describes a lot of this village. They keep the trough from packing with leaves and they cut how often anybody has to be on a ladder. They are not maintenance-free, no matter what the brochure says. Fine debris still gets through most designs, shingle grit accumulates, and a guard that clogs on top sheds water straight over the edge while the trough underneath stays dry and clean.

What guards do not do is make an undersized gutter adequate. If your gutter overflows in a downpour with nothing in it, a guard changes nothing about that. We will tell you when guards are worth it on your house and when the money belongs in capacity instead.

Ice Dams And What Gutters Have To Do With Them

Gutters do not cause ice dams. That is worth saying plainly because a lot of people are told otherwise. An ice dam forms when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, the meltwater runs down to the cold eave and refreezes there. The gutter is simply where you notice it, because that is where the ice piles up and the icicles hang.

What gutters can do is make it worse once it has started, by holding a mass of ice at the eave. But pulling the gutters off would not solve anything, and the fix is upstream: air sealing and insulation in the attic, and ventilation that keeps the roof deck cold. If you get dams every winter, we will look at the roof and the attic rather than sell you gutters and let you find out in January.

How We Work A Gutter Job

Measure The Roof, Not The Gutter

Area feeding each run, pitch, and where valleys concentrate. That is what sets the trough, not what happened to be there before.

Count The Outlets

Run length against downspout count. Adding an outlet often beats upsizing the whole run, and costs less doing it.

Check The Fascia

Hangers need sound wood. Soft or rotted fascia gets rebuilt first, because nothing hung on bad board stays hung.

Settle The Discharge

Where each downspout lets go, and how far past the backfill it throws. Water at the wall is a basement problem in waiting.

Questions That Come Up On Gutter Jobs

My gutters overflow but they are completely clean. What is going on?

That is the capacity conversation rather than a maintenance one. A clean trough that sheets over the front lip in a hard rain is either too small for the roof area feeding it or short on outlets, and usually it is the outlets. We measure the run before recommending anything, because adding a downspout is a great deal cheaper than replacing eighty feet of gutter.

Do I need six inch gutters?

Some houses genuinely do and most do not. Long unbroken runs on steep roofs, and any run catching a valley, are the usual candidates. If your five inch has never overflowed except when it was packed with maple seeds, the honest answer is that you have a cleaning problem and not a sizing one, and we will tell you that.

Will new gutters stop my basement from getting wet?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on where the water is going once it leaves the downspout. Dumping a roof’s worth of runoff into clay soil right against the wall, storm after storm, is a common cause of a damp basement. Extending the discharge well past the backfill often changes it. If it does not, the problem is below grade and new gutters were never going to fix it.

Are gutter guards worth it?

Under mature trees they usually are, and this village has plenty of those. They cut ladder time and keep the trough from packing solid every fall. What they are not is maintenance-free, whatever the brochure says. My gutters fill with ice every winter. Is that a gutter problem?

No, and this one gets misdiagnosed constantly. Ice at the eave means heat is escaping into the attic, melting snow up high, and that meltwater is refreezing where the roof is cold. The gutter is just where you see it happen. The repair is attic air sealing, insulation and ventilation, so we would look at the roof before selling you gutters.

In most cases yes.
